West Richland wastewater plant wins Ecologys 2024 outstanding performance award for second year

The Washington State Department of Ecology presented West Richlands wastewater treatment plant with the 2024 Outstanding Performance Award during the Sept. 16 West Richland City Council meeting, marking the plants second consecutive year to receive the honor. Chad Holman of the Department of Ecology presented the recognition and praised the plant staff for their "exceptional effort, technical skills [and] unwavering commitment."
The award recognizes consistent, high-level operation of a treatment plant and the works role in protecting state rivers, lakes and streams. "You have to be on your game every single day," Holman said, adding that a single mistake can disqualify a plant from the award. Dustin Miller, identified by council staff as the citys sewer operations manager, accepted the award on behalf of the treatment-plant team.
City staff and councilmembers highlighted both plant operations and the citys collection system work that prevents backups and overflows. A staff speaker noted that Benton County had multiple award winners this year and that West Richlands plant had missed the award only a few times over the past 20 years.
Councilmembers and staff said the recognition is a reminder of ongoing operational responsibilities; no formal policy action was taken. The presentation included a short photo opportunity and brief remarks from the mayor and council.
