A public commenter identified as Jared told the court the largest incident, referred to in the meeting as the Young 4469 fire, "the fire burns approximately 224 acres. As of my report, it was 90% contained. Forward progression had been stopped and the containment lines were complete." Commissioners and county staff said local firefighters and mutual aid crews had been working continuously to contain several blazes and that fire chiefs had requested formal restrictions.
The move followed several reports during the meeting describing heavy firefighting activity and scattered wind damage across the county. Commissioners said crews expected to remain on site to complete mop-up operations and that local crews would continue monitoring hotspots overnight. The court did not specify an exact end date for the burn ban when it voted; officials said they would revisit the order as conditions change.
The motion to impose the burn ban was made and seconded on the floor of the court and carried 5-0.
County leaders asked residents to follow guidance from local fire departments and to report new fires immediately by calling local emergency numbers. The court said it would communicate any changes to the ban on the county’s official channels and its livestreamed meetings.
The declaration comes amid unusually active fire conditions described in the meeting and follows comments from multiple commissioners thanking firefighters for extended shifts over the weekend.
