ABC Unified trustee reports school year start, Measure BB modernization and attendance statistics

Francisco Noyola, trustee representative for Hawaiian Gardens on the ABC Unified School District board, gave a back-to-school update to the city council on Aug. 27, highlighting school programs, upcoming meetings and facility modernization under Measure BB.
Noyola said Aloha Elementary is an AVID school and continues to focus on health and science; Hawaiian Elementary is emphasizing writing across grade levels and added a new art teacher; Ferguson Elementary launched a food recycling program and parent-engagement efforts; Melbourne Elementary is scheduled for modernization under Measure BB, with work expected to complete in June 2026.
Noyola reported that ABC attendance rates have remained consistent at an average of 98% despite declining enrollment and said the district will hold a study session on declining enrollment and facilities Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. at the district office. He also thanked local deputies for assisting with school drop-off and traffic.
Noyola described student programs and events: Fedde Middle School hosted a preview day for seventh graders and reported success in last year’s history-day and podcast competitions. He noted the district provides bus service for Huntington Park-area students and invited council members to the upcoming facilities study session.
