Farragut planning commission adopts update to driveway rules, limits single‑family driveway width in right of way to 24 feet

The Farragut Municipal Planning Commission on June 26 voted unanimously to approve Ordinance 25‑15, which updates various provisions of Chapter 22, Article 5 (Driveways and Other Access Ways) in the Farragut Municipal Code.
Staff told commissioners the ordinance was originally drafted in 1997 and contained outdated provisions; the rewrite updates language to reflect current practice and clarifies how different access approvals occur. The commission had previously discussed parts of the ordinance at two workshop meetings.
A commissioner proposed one recommended change regarding residential driveway widths. The revised language approved by the commission clarifies that the maximum width of a driveway for a single‑family dwelling shall be 24 feet within the public right of way (excluding turnarounds and areas not in the right of way). The change was described in staff materials as intended to prevent large, runway‑style driveway approaches adjacent to the street while allowing typical residential access for two vehicles.
The ordinance excludes the traffic impact study section that was updated separately about a year earlier, staff said. The updated ordinance and the commission’s supporting resolution (P.C.‑25‑O‑7 as referenced in the meeting) were recommended by staff and approved without public comment.
Commissioners moved and seconded the amended motion; the vote was unanimous. The ordinance will take effect according to normal municipal procedures.
