Duxbury School Committee debates annual goals, establishes superintendent evaluation subcommittee

The Duxbury School Committee spent an extended portion of the meeting reviewing a draft set of proposed committee goals for the school year and agreed on follow‑up steps toward a final vote.

The committee discussed consolidating an extensive draft into a shorter set of actionable priorities tied to four core areas: budgetary oversight, policies, district goals and the superintendent evaluation. Members emphasized the need for SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time‑bound) goals, clearer agenda alignment with strategic priorities and better templates for regular reporting.

Members agreed to individually select their top priorities and return with three proposed goals each; committee leadership placed a vote to finalize goals on the Sept. 17 meeting agenda. Committee members repeatedly voiced that budget planning, superintendent evaluation (with a clearer agreed process) and communication around the district’s capital and programmatic needs should be high priorities.

The committee also voted to create a superintendent evaluation subcommittee to recommend indicators and a process for the full committee. The subcommittee charge, as discussed, will include recommending whether to use a one‑ or two‑year evaluation cycle, selecting up to a dozen prioritized evaluation indicators and proposing timelines; volunteers from the committee were identified to staff that subcommittee and will meet prior to the Sept. 17 meeting to report back. The motion carried by voice vote.

Committee members asked staff to return with finalized drafts aligning district KPIs with committee goals and said they expected a more concise document at the next meeting to allow a committee vote.
