Merrillville council approves two redevelopment appropriation resolutions

The Town Council of the Town of Merrillville voted unanimously Sept. 23 to approve two resolutions from the town Redevelopment Commission that appropriate funds for professional services and public transportation and establish accounting lines for a Liberty Estates project.
The first resolution, Resolution 25-16, was described by town staff as a companion item to a measure read on first reading at the council's Sept. 9 meeting and advertised for final action. Town staff said the measure increases several line items to pay professional services and to replenish public transportation funds. "This is a companion resolution that was read on first reading at the last town council meeting on Sept. 9. ... to increase a few of our line items, to pay professional services and to replenish some of the public transportation funds," said Angie Chilcott, a town staff member.
The second measure, Resolution 25-17, establishes the fund and line items for the Liberty Estates account so bills related to that project can be paid and reported. "This resolution is to actually create the fund and the line items for the Liberty Estates. So we're paying those bills, and we want to make sure that they're appropriately reported," Chilcott said.
Both resolutions were moved by Councilwoman Uzelak and seconded by Councilwoman Shauna Haynes Edwards. The council voted by roll call; Councilwoman Haines Edwards, Councilwoman Uzelak, Councilwoman Hardaway and Councilman Petty voted yes on each resolution. Each measure passed, 4-0.
The meeting opened with approval of the consent agenda, which included the accounts payable register/voucher approval for Sept. 23, 2025, and approval of meeting minutes from Aug. 26, 2025. After the two Redevelopment Commission resolutions, the council had no further business and adjourned.
