The Dayton City School District Board of Education voted unanimously on Sept. 9 to support a two-year honorary renaming of Fitch Street (the roadway adjacent to Mound Street School) as Raymond Hummons Way.
Ashton Dupler, a pastor and Equity Center staffer, spoke during public comment to request the honorary designation and said petition signatures representing adjacent landowners had been collected. “He has been a lifelong member of Methodist Church. He has been, was the union president for Local 3 0 4 … and was also just an incredible friend,” Dupler said, describing Raymond Hummons as “a community giant, an unsung hero.”
Board action Board Member Walker moved the motion to approve the request; Miss Witt seconded. The roll-call vote recorded five yes votes from President Goodwin, Dr. Bailey, Mr. Smith, Mr. Walker and Miss Witt.
Why it matters The petitioner said the temporary naming recognizes Hummons’s long-running volunteer work, including transportation support for Roosevelt staff and frequent participation at school events. Dupler said he would submit the city petition and invited board members to attend a public event if the city commission approves the city-level steps.
Ending: The board’s vote supported the community petition; Dupler said organizers will proceed with the city land-board and commission process for final street-sign designation and asked members to keep the naming as a surprise for Hummons.
