Wasatch Integrated reports green-waste capacity study and waste-stream audit to Clearfield council

Council Member Petersen briefed the council on recent updates from Wasatch Integrated, the regional waste management district. Petersen said Farmington City plans to add green-waste service as part of the regional system, and that Wasatch Integrated is commissioning an engineering study to determine whether the facility can support adding more cities.

Petersen explained the district originally built two-thirds of the facility27s engineered capacity (citing construction-cost constraints during the initial build) and that the metric driving expansion is whether the operation can handle high-volume periods such as April grass-cutting season. The district has also launched a separate waste-stream audit: contractors are physically sorting material to determine what proportion of residents27 separated recycling and green waste actually reaches processing and is sold or otherwise handled in the United States versus being used for alternative fuels or disposed of.

Petersen said the district aims for a high transfer rate (the council heard a target of roughly 90% of separated material reaching its intended diversion destination) and is working to shift long-term landfill usage from the previously used facility (referred to in the meeting audio as "Decoy") toward Bayview, which the council member said would have long-term effects on regional waste handling.

No formal council action was taken; council members were updated and told the full audit results would be provided when available.
