Board hears updates on tutoring pilot and counselor industry partnership; Aerojet tour planned

District staff briefed the board on two district initiatives intended to expand student supports and strengthen school‑business connections: a Varsity Tutors pilot for Title I schools and a counselor professional‑development day with local industry partners that includes a tour of Aerojet.
Staff said the Varsity Tutors pilot is running in four Title I schools for half the year; principals selected participating students and the program provides synchronous one‑on‑one tutoring in reading and math, plus an assessment component that guides next skills. Staff said tutors will work during supervised before‑school sessions and parents were offered an opt‑out. ‘‘It lessens the load on our teachers, and provides another source of tutoring for our students,’’ one staff member said.
Separately, staff described partnerships with the county’s economic development and tourism offices to host counselors at industry sites, present local business needs and tour Aerojet. Administration said the event will help counselors better advise students on credentials and local employment pathways. The superintendent said counselors and assistant principals who oversee career and technical education will attend, and that a brief background check will be required for the Aerojet visit.
Board members praised the pilot and the industry engagement plan and asked that staff monitor outcomes and report back to the board. Staff said they will provide periodic updates and evaluate pilot effectiveness before seeking operating‑budget continuation.
