Board approves OCHS drone mentoring club field trip to Joint Base Andrews

The Orange County School Board approved a field trip request allowing four students from the OCHS drone mentoring club to travel with staff and exhibit at the Joint Base Andrews air show and vendor fair.
Superintendent Dr. Hornick described the program partnership among Smart Community STEM, the Boys and Girls Club of Orange and Orange County Public Schools. He said high‑school students who attend drone camp over the summer become paid employees of Smart Community STEM and then mentor middle‑school students at the Boys and Girls Club using simulator software and NIST coursework that prepares them for a Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 license.
Dr. Hornick said the four students will likely attend all three days of the event and that the school division’s transportation and staff supervision will be provided. A staff member indicated the trip will be coordinated by Ms. Paterra in a division vehicle.
Board member Miss Harrington asked if students could provide a video presentation when they return; Dr. Hornick said the umbrella group will attend the October 6 board meeting and staff will pursue a student presentation or video for that meeting.
The motion to approve the field trip passed by voice vote; meeting remarks recorded the vote as four yes votes and no no votes.
