The Port Washington Board of Public Works approved an amended state‑municipal agreement (SMA) with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the resurfacing of State Highway 33 that adds two left‑turn lanes and a rapid flashing beacon at Sweetwater Road.
Staff said the letting is scheduled for next year and that the city requested left‑turn lanes to improve access, including for the city’s police and fire building. The revised city share is estimated at $197,625; staff said the prior estimate before the additions was $23,250. Staff recommended approving the SMA amendment so the additions can be included in the DOT project.
Board members questioned the relative costs; staff explained DOT’s process can require more detailed environmental documentation and additional surveying when lane additions are added to a resurfacing project, which can raise engineering and construction costs. A motion by Alderman Tierney to approve the staff recommendation was seconded by Mr. Sudendorf and carried by voice vote.
The amended SMA also includes installation of a rapid flashing beacon at Sweetwater and Highway 33. Staff said the left‑turn lanes are important for access to the city’s public safety building and to accommodate anticipated development on Shannon Farm, which the city owns.
The board approved the SMA amendment; the item will proceed through the DOT letting process and construction will be scheduled by WisDOT.
