Board recommends council approve updated urban area functional classification map with DOT corrections
Summary
The Board recommended the Common Council approve a state-provided update to the Grafton–Cedarburg–Port Washington–Saukville urban area functional classification map, asking that DOT correct a mapping error before council action.
The Port Washington Board of Public Works recommended the Common Council approve changes to the Grafton, Cedarburg, Port Washington, Saukville Urban Area Boundary Functional Classification System, subject to a correction the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will make to the map.
Staff explained the resolution before the board is a recommendation to council and that DOT provided the map; staff noted DOT inadvertently highlighted Landau Street rather than Van Buren Street and extending Holden Street on one sheet. The city will request that DOT correct that error before the item proceeds to the Common Council. Staff said classification maps are revised about every 10 years and the update will not affect existing arterials and collectors already identified. DOT classifies roadways as urban vs. rural for certain funding and program purposes; staff said an area reclassified as rural would still be eligible for DOT assistance but would fall into a different classification.
Alderman Tierney moved to approve the resolution pending DOT’s corrections; a second was recorded and the motion carried by voice vote.
Staff noted that the map will be taken up at the October 10 Common Council meeting (subject to final numbering and scheduling changes) and that future annexations codified by the state will be reflected in later map revisions.
