Resident urges board to address racing bicycles, pedestrian safety at Fireman's Park

Raeanne James, a resident who lives near Woodward and Hodges, told the Beecher Village Board on Sept. 22 that she was knocked off her feet by a bicyclist at Fireman's Park and urged the board to address what she described as recurring unsafe bicycle activity.
James said the incident occurred on a recent Friday evening and involved a group of about 10 youths racing on the park track. She said she fell and hit concrete and that the children showed little regard for adults, walkers and a small child on a scooter. James said she is 65 and already has a preexisting back problem; she asked the board to act before someone is seriously injured.
A police officer who responded told James the problem has been getting worse, she said. James suggested reinstating bicycle-safety programs once offered by the police and fire departments, including safety flags and helmet education.
Trustees acknowledged the complaint and noted that the board would discuss e-bikes and related rules in a later agenda item. No formal action was taken during public comment; trustees and staff said the issue would be considered as part of public-safety discussions.
