Superintendent introduces new student representatives and launches district website and app

Superintendent Dr. Best introduced the district’s two new student representatives to the board and outlined a new communications push that includes a redesigned website and a district mobile app, the board heard Aug. 25.
Dr. Best asked Isabella Phillip and Yuki Wu to stand and noted Phillip is a 10th-grade student involved in lacrosse, the news studio, band and jazz combo, debate and FBLA. Dr. Best said Yuki Wu is an 11th-grade student who is finance captain for Minnithon, president of the campus chapter of Girl Up, and a member of the Asian cultures club and mock trial, among other activities. Dr. Best said the students have ideas for the student-representative role and the district looks forward to their contributions at future meetings.
Why it matters: The district said the new student representatives will bring student perspectives to the board and the administration will support them in shaping the role over the school year.
Dr. Best also asked Technology staff member Mr. Patel to demonstrate the district’s new website and the Lower Moreland Township Schools app. Mr. Patel showed a promotional video for the app and described features staff highlighted to the board: a news feed for district announcements, a calendar that families can add events from, lunch menus, documents, and a notification center that relies on users enabling push notifications. The superintendent said the site and app went live the previous Friday in a soft launch; the district included the app video in its communication to families after the first day of school and plans to emphasize the app at back-to-school nights beginning with the middle school.
Dr. Best said the first day of school went “off without a hitch” and encouraged families and community members to download the app for calendar and notification convenience.
Ending: The district invited community members without children in district schools to download the app and follow district news; no board action was required on the update.
