Jean Carlson of the Solid Waste Management District told the County Council that the district would like to plant 307 trees this fall at six public locations in Vanderburgh County and requested a $30,000 appropriation to pay for the work. The council approved the request by voice vote.
Carlson said the district and the city arborist identified public sites for planting; the packet included maps and a species legend. Proposed locations listed on the record were Gable Soccer Complex, Deaconess Sports Park, Evansville State Hospital, McDonough Golf Course (north of the Weights & Measures facility), Ighal Hart Park and Stockwell Park.
A council member raised the issue of invasive Bradford pears and asked whether the district had plans to remove or replace existing pear trees in certain corridors; Carlson said the district has plans to remove formally planted pear trees when redevelopment or grant opportunities allow and cited a separate grant for Wabash Avenue tree replacement being managed through local partners.
Ending: The council approved the one‑time $30,000 appropriation for fall plantings and accepted staff's plan to add $30,000 to the Solid Waste District’s contractual services line in the 2026 budget to avoid repeated appropriations.
