Board proclaims Sept. 20 Yuba River cleanup; organizers stress micro-trash removal and ambassador program

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 9 proclaimed Sept. 20, 2025, as the day of the South Yuba River Citizens League's (CIRCLE) 28th annual Yuba River cleanup and recognized the organization's river-ambassador and public-safety work.
Daniel Elkin, communications and engagement director for CIRCLE, told the board the cleanup is "more than an act of service; it is a celebration of community" and said volunteers have removed more than 135 tons of waste from the watershed over the program's history. Elkin said this year's cleanup will emphasize removing "micro trash" small fragments of plastic, glass, styrofoam and cigarette butts that persist in the ecosystem and can be ingested by wildlife.
Elkin and county staff highlighted CIRCLE's River Ambassador program, which he said counted 36,407 visitors and had 8,827 interactions on weekends at high-use crossings this season; staff said nearly 90% of those visitors were from out of town. County recreation staff praised the group's coordination within the South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort and the ambassadors' role in promoting consistent safety messaging about packing out trash, avoiding glass and using safe swimming practices.
The board adopted the proclamation unanimously and thanked CIRCLE volunteers. Organizers invited the public to participate in the Sept. 20 cleanup and the post-cleanup volunteer appreciation event at Condon Park in Grass Valley.
