Commissioner Joey Gonzales, Nueces County Commissioner, Precinct 2, received public recognition from West Oso ISD trustees on the district’s agenda for his leadership in bringing Operation Health and Wellness missions to the area.
School and community leaders said the initiative — which the presenters described as offering medical, vision, behavioral health, dental and veterinary services in a single visit — expanded access to care for families and students who might otherwise go without. "What might have been out of reach for many became accessible because of his forward thinking and determination to make sure that no one in our county is left without care," a district speaker said during the presentation.
Bill, a representative who spoke on behalf of South Coastal AHEC at the meeting, read a certificate thanking West Oso ISD and Commissioner Gonzales for a partnership on the Operation Health and Wellness IRT missions from 2022 to 2025. "Your partnership and shared commitment in promoting healthy lives for your students and our community is truly commendable," Bill said.
At the meeting RJ Alvarado, introduced by presenters and later called out by several trustees and staff, was singled out for her work supporting the missions in the district. Several speakers from the district and community described personal examples of people helped by the missions, including children receiving glasses and adults receiving dental care; one speaker recounted arranging transportation back to Austin for a person who was homeless and received dental and medical treatment.
The board displayed a certificate of appreciation and multiple trustees and staff thanked Commissioner Gonzales and the Operation Health and Wellness partners. No formal board action was required or taken on this recognition item.
