Board reviews sponsorship approval process, PSBA nominations and first reading to revise policy on committees

Doctor Pate Petit (presenting) described a sponsorship agreement with Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster for $5,600 through the MTEF sponsorship process and recommended that future sponsor approvals include review of the exact ad copy or materials being approved. "I'm recommending moving forward that we work with MTEF to make sure when you're approving such sponsors that you actually have the ad that you are approving moving forward," Petit said.
Board members then discussed several governance items. The board considered two overnight out-of-state athletic trips (administration confirmed funding, chaperones and transportation arrangements) and reviewed uncontested slates for PSBA leadership positions. Several board members said an IU board declined to elect the PSBA nominees and raised concerns about lack of candidate information; one member noted bios would be added to the agenda packet for reference.
Doctor Kate Hefty presented a first reading of policy 005 (organization). She noted the recommended change affects page 5 and would remove language that currently says, "Committee shall not include a majority of the membership of the board," which is an internal district restriction not required by state law. "In the case that the board continues with the determination to make a committee of the whole, we would need to remove that language," Hefty said. The policy will return for a second reading and final approval the following month if the board advances the change.
