Superintendent outlines enrollment, mental-health supports and welcomes new assistant principal

Superintendent Dr. Kate Teske reported the district’s current enrollment at 6,036 students and described the district’s tiered approach to mental-health supports as part of National Suicide Prevention Month.
Dr. Teske said the district had 51 outplaced students (with receiving placements such as the IU, Rock River, New Story, Vista and Bradley Center) and one student receiving homebound instruction as of the date of the meeting. She outlined a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for well-being: universal (tier 1) screening K–12, targeted small-group supports (tier 2) and intensive interventions (tier 3). She listed programs and contracts used for tier 2 and 3 supports, including school-based therapy, counseling services, student assistance programs for grades 5–12 through the Karen Foundation, a behavior specialist, school psychologists, social workers, mentor programs and staff training to identify signs of suicide.
Dr. Teske introduced Brock Benmore as the district’s new assistant principal at the high school, noting Pennsylvania allows districts to retain employees who submit resignations for up to 60 days while hiring processes conclude. The superintendent said Benmore has 21 years of experience and recently served as an administrator at Garden Spot High School.
The board also recognized Samantha Haldeman as the high-school employee of the month; Teske described Haldeman as the grades 7–12 choral director who leads multiple choirs and an inclusive unified music program.
Dr. Teske said she is working through a 100-day plan and expects to set goals drawn from that plan at the October board meeting, when the district will mark the 100-day milestone.
