City staff reported at the Sept. 8 meeting that the East Bayfront Greenway Trail held a groundbreaking and that construction is expected to be complete this fall, with some native plantings postponed until spring.
The update matters because the new park and trail will add open space to a neighborhood that has had limited parks and is intended to support local recreation and spur investment.
Staff said the East Bayfront Greenway Trail will occupy the 400 block between Sixth and Seventh Streets and that the city owns the parcel and will maintain it; the redevelopment authority is managing the project using ARP funding transferred from the city. Construction is slated to finish this fall, but plantings will be completed in spring because of seasonal constraints. Staff described project renderings and said the trail is part of a longer vision from a Michael Baker plan that links to vacant‑land consolidation and broader neighborhood revitalization goals.
Staff also reported on a parks pop‑up during Celebrate Erie that ran in the Boston Store lobby and drew roughly 150 visitors. The pop‑up solicited stories and feedback about the city’s park system; staff said all materials and a survey will be available on the city website in coming weeks. Staff noted the city now lists 51 parks.
