City completes first phase of historic resource survey; database forms uploaded to PA SHPO

City planning staff reported on Sept. 8 that the first phase of Erie’s citywide historic resource survey is complete and that documentation forms have been uploaded to the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (PA SHPO).
The survey matters because it provides baseline information about historic resources citywide and will inform future planning, National Register nominations and HRC reviews.
Staff said the contractor, EDR, remains on schedule to finish the contract work by the end of the month and that roughly 52 percent of city properties were included in this first phase. The uploaded forms include property descriptions, photographs and staff recommendations about National Register eligibility. Staff said they will confirm with PA SHPO that records move from restricted to public access once PA SHPO processes the submission.
Commissioners said the survey gives the city a data foundation for future preservation and planning decisions and noted the documentation will help the HRC and planning commission evaluate projects and nominations.
