Talbot County proclaims Constitution and Citizenship Week; organizers plan student competitions, historical reenactments

The County Council voted to proclaim Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Constitution and Citizenship Week in Talbot County and heard organizers outline events for students and the public.
Richard Holman and Michelle Ewing, organizers with the Midshore Constitution Alliance, told the council the fourth-annual program will emphasize youth education, local "hidden history" programming and community volunteers. Holman said the alliance has expanded partnerships with Washington College's Center for Religion, Politics and Culture, the Talbot County Educational Foundation, the Talbot Historical Society and the Sons of the American Revolution.
Organizers described an in-school lecture and a public event at the Academy of the Arts on the 17th, student events at Easton High School the following day and a scholastic competition at the Talbot County Free Library on Sept. 20. "We have at least 200 students from Easton High School attending the presentation that will be given on the seventeenth at the Art Academy," an organizer said, and the winning school team will sign a pendant Constitution to be displayed at their school.
Why this matters: The organizers said the week aims to increase civic knowledge among students and the public through theatrical reenactments, lectures and a scholastic competition.
Council action
The council moved and seconded the proclamation and the secretary recorded unanimous affirmative votes to adopt the proclamation into the record.

Organizers thanked the council and invited members of the public to attend events during the week. "We're expanding this to include not just the background and fundamental education of the constitution... but this year, we're also adding more content on hidden history for Talbot County," Richard Holman said.
