Friends of the Fairgrounds press county for staged pavilion repairs; commissioners ask for bids and plan

Commissioners and the speaker discussed permitting and code requirements for camper hookups at the fairgrounds. The group was told that, under City of Goodland code, campsites of more than nine units require wash facilities and sewer hookups; the county does not have zoning inside the city limits and any variance would be considered by the City of Goodland Board of Zoning Appeals. The speaker said the county would seek a temporary variance for sewer and that a variance hearing was scheduled for Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.
Commissioners asked the group to return with a written prioritized plan and additional bids. One commissioner suggested publishing a public bid notice to ensure competitive pricing and to allow local contractors and the technical college to propose work. The group and the commission agreed to reconvene on Oct. 14 with more detail so the commission could consider how much county funding could be committed and whether to proceed in stages.
The speaker also described a longer‑term vision for a centennial celebration planned for 2027 and encouraged the county to begin priority maintenance now to preserve the building and make it suitable for future events.
