Placer County OKs $4.52 million WIC revenue agreement with state health department

The Placer County Board of Supervisors voted to authorize a revenue agreement with the California Department of Public Health to operate the Women, Infants and Children program, commonly known as WIC, for Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2028, for an amount not to exceed $4,519,226 and to allow related amendments up to $100,000.
The action, introduced by Mike Romero, Deputy Director of Health and Human Services (Public Health Division), directs the county to accept state funding for local WIC operations and authorize the county director of health and human services or designee to sign the agreement and related documents with concurrence from county risk management and county counsel. "WIC provides participants with access to scientifically selected nutrient rich foods, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care and community programs," Romero told the board.
Nut graf: The agreement funds Placer County's WIC offices that serve pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to age 5 and supports local grocery purchases, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to Medi‑Cal and CalFresh. Romero told the board the county serves about 3,410 income‑eligible participants per month and that each year WIC participants access more than $3 million in healthy foods from local grocers using program cards.
Board members offered no questions and took no public testimony before approving the resolution. Supervisor Jones moved approval; Supervisor Landon seconded. The board approved the item by voice vote; the clerk recorded the motion as carried.
The county said the contract is consistent with prior WIC service delivery in Rocklin, Auburn and Kings Beach (Eastern Placer) and that program operations and reporting will continue to be overseen by the Public Health Division. The board record includes authorization for staff to sign amendments up to $100,000 "consistent with the subject matter and scope of work," subject to county counsel and risk management concurrence.
Ending: County staff said they stand ready to answer follow‑up questions about enrollment and service sites; no additional board direction was recorded at the meeting.
