City completes Metalee Golf Course irrigation overhaul; new pump station, 14 miles of pipe and smart controls installed

Michael Leek, a city staff member, updated the Mayor and Board of Commissioners on the recently completed Metalee Golf Course irrigation upgrade.
Leek said the project included installation of a Watertronix pump station with a 40-horsepower working pump and a 3-horsepower maintainer, roughly 75,000 feet of HDPE pipe (about 14 miles), 8-inch and 6-inch mains, 110 mainline and lateral valves, 16 field satellites (controllers), 20 quick-connect valves for hand-watering and about 850,000 feet of control wire. He said EC Design Group of Des Moines was the irrigation consultant and Superior Services of Mustang won the pump-station contract.
The new system uses Toro Link central-control software and a weather station tied to the control system. Leek said the weather station reports evapotranspiration and precipitation, allowing staff to reduce irrigation automatically when sufficient rain is recorded.
Leek described the construction process, including mainline installation beginning May 23, hand-fused HDPE pipe, and challenges such as crossing existing, older utility mains (including a six-inch asbestos line that required repair). He said crews avoided leaving open trenches overnight and completed the green complexes in mid-July; the pump station was tied into the new mains July 11. The contractor completed the project Aug. 15, Leek said.
Leek said the course remained open during the work; the city closed at most one or two holes at a time and reported similar July revenue to the previous year. Commissioners and staff discussed the timing of final GIS deliverables that will show exact locations for each sprinkler head and valve; Leek said the consultant had not yet provided the full GIS package and that payment was pending until it was received.
