Village Hall projects: VFDs, digital HVAC controls, compressors and EV charging planned for 2026

Village staff told the finance committee on Sept. 25 that several Village Hall building systems need near‑term work and recommended funding for design and construction in 2026.
Staff described an energy‑efficiency package led by a newly hired building maintenance superintendent that includes installing variable frequency drives (VFDs) on HVAC motors and converting room pneumatic control boxes to digital controls. Staff said motors currently operate at full‑on or off and that VFDs will allow variable speeds to reduce stress on motors and smooth temperature changes across occupied spaces. The maintenance team reported a roughly 40% energy reduction in the village’s facilities since the superintendent started and identified the VFDs and digital controls as measures that would extend equipment life.
Capital items on the Village Hall sheets included:
- Design and construction funding to install variable frequency drives on major HVAC motors and to convert pneumatic VAV boxes to digital controls. - Replacement of two chiller compressors that failed during 2025 startup (staff said the system temporarily ran on the remaining compressors but is designed to use four) - A small furniture/fit‑out allocation for second‑floor staff workstations and the planned welcome center - Additional EV charging capacity in the Village Hall lot, with staff recommending installing two more Level 2 chargers and placeholder budget for expanded electrical work if the village continues to add EV fleet vehicles.
Staff emphasized that the electrical and control upgrades are compatible with a larger planned Village Hall renovation and that the majority of the facility’s main mechanical components will remain in place and be reused. Trustees asked whether the existing electrical service can support additional EV chargers; staff said the existing service can support two more Level 2 chargers to the back lot and that the 2027 placeholder includes funds for larger electrical upgrades if future expansion continues.
Why it matters: the Village Hall projects are focused on energy efficiency, equipment longevity and staff workspace improvements. Staff framed some of the work as necessary maintenance that aligns with a larger renovation rather than as duplicative spending.
