The Planning and Economic Development Committee voted to forward an ordinance granting a ramp easement in the city's right-of-way for a building at 210 East South Works Street so the property owner can construct an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp.
Staff said the building, owned by the Lanzettas, is undergoing redevelopment into a storage facility and currently has a sideways step at its front door. The applicant asked the city to grant an easement so a compliant ramp can be built that will provide accessible entry to the front door.
Kelly Henshall, who presented the item, showed pictures and told the committee the sidewalk in front of the building is wide enough to provide a passageway around the proposed ramp. Committee members asked whether the ramp would create conflicts with pedestrians; one member said, "By Winchester City standards, that's a very wide sidewalk. So I think that there's definitely ample passageway around it." No technical problems were identified in committee discussion.
A committee member moved to forward the ordinance with a recommendation for approval; the motion carried after an "Aye" vote was recorded. Staff said it was available to answer further questions and will include easement exhibits in the council packet.
