Timnath council approves $334,000 Iteris signal detection upgrade for nine intersections

The Timnath Town Council voted unanimously on Sept. 23 to approve Resolution 60 Series 2025, authorizing purchase and installation of signal detection equipment at nine traffic signals in town.
Public Works staff described the project as an early action item from the town's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) signal upgrade plan. The recommended system is the Iteris Vantage Next (Vector) system. Staff told council the system uses video and radar to detect vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, is compatible with existing controllers and cabinets, and is widely used by Colorado Department of Transportation Region 4.
Project procurement uses a CDOT cooperative agreement; Mobotrex is the sole Colorado distributor identified, and Lighthouse Transportation Group, the town's on-call signal maintenance contractor, will perform installation. Staff summarized costs: equipment about $257,000 for nine signals and installation about $77,000, for a total near $334,000. Staff said the total project cost fits within the 2025 CIP budget and that roughly $50,000 of the 2025 contract budget remains.
During discussion council members asked whether the system can eventually coordinate with neighboring and regional systems. Staff replied that detection is the first step and that regional coordination would be achieved when the town builds the traffic control center and fiber connections; "the answer is yes eventually," one staff presenter said. Council also asked about red-light enforcement and other camera functions; staff said the proposed equipment is designed specifically for detection and that other camera functions could be considered as separate future additions.
Council members expressed support for improved safety and regional coordination; the motion to approve the resolution passed 5-0.
What's next: equipment will be ordered (three to four weeks lead time) and installation is expected to take about two weeks once parts arrive; staff said remaining ITS upgrades, including controllers and a virtual central system, are planned for 2026 as CIP funds allow.
