Residents ask for support for new Kiwanis club and student-feeding nonprofit; library lists October programs

Representatives of a nonprofit identified as Avansar (presented in the transcript as “Alvanzar/Avansar”) described a multi-year effort to feed students and veterans at East Los Angeles College. Ernest Esquer said the program provides food roughly twice a month and asked for community and city support for a Nov. 8 fundraiser to be held at Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights. Lorraine Delaune said the program once fed about 350 students and now serves roughly 550 students each distribution; she said La Mascota Bakery donates about 800 items per month to the effort.
Lauren Talbot, community library manager at the Pico Rivera Library, outlined October programs: a Star Wars Reads family event on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.; two teen programs for Filipino American Heritage Month (Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.); and that the Rivera Library would be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
The comments were received during the public-comment segment; none of the items prompted formal council action at the meeting. Speakers asked for community volunteers, ticket or table purchases for the fundraiser, and continued support for student nourishment programs.
