City staff demonstrated a new public-facing construction impacts map — nicknamed the “cone zone” portal — at the Transportation Building Board’s Aug. 2025 meeting and said the tool lists active road and trail closures with links to project pages.
The portal, launched earlier in the summer, displays a GIS map of current traffic and trail impacts alongside a project list. Staff said the map initially replaced a drop-down list and that it now offers pop-up links to project web pages where more details can be found. The intent is to improve transparency about closures and construction sequencing.
Board members and staff discussed expanding the portal’s content to provide more context — for example, a short explanatory paragraph about why a project is happening and how it ties to the city’s broader plans, plus QR-code signage at construction sites so passersby can link directly to the project page.
Why it matters: Staff said clearer public communication about road and trail construction will help residents understand timelines and reduce confusion. Staff and the board also noted the portal is one component in a larger plan to improve project tracking and public information, which may include an internal project-management information system later.
Next steps: Staff plan to continue populating the portal with active projects, add links to existing project pages and coordinate with the city communications team about messaging and signage.
