NextGen advisory board seeks closer collaboration on Transportation Master Plan and youth outreach

Bobby Thomas, introduced as a guest from the NextGen advisory board, told the Transportation and Mobility Board on July 24 that NextGen members want closer coordination as the city updates the Transportation Master Plan.
“NextGen board is 7 people. Really the only requirement being under the age of 35,” Thomas said, describing the board’s charge to advise City Council and to connect younger residents to city work. He said NextGen has been focusing on environment and the South Metro waste-disposal plan, and is interested in economic development, safety, and housing discussions.
Derek, a Transportation and Mobility Board member, said the board would like to share meeting agendas three to six months in advance so NextGen can identify items where the groups overlap and attend or offer input. Derek said the transportation board wants to surface safety, multimodal planning and “last-mile” transit issues where NextGen perspectives can add value.
NextGen members and city staff discussed concrete collaboration items: sharing the city’s public survey link for the Transportation Master Plan, coordinating outreach to ACC students and other younger residents, and reviewing memos and reports in draft to provide feedback. A city staff member said the board’s upcoming public survey is useful and recommended staff circulate it widely.
Board members agreed there can be multiple forms of engagement, from staff reports to joint sessions. No formal motion or vote was taken; participants asked staff to follow up on sharing agendas, survey links and possible joint meeting dates.
The discussion identified the Transportation Master Plan update as a priority piece of work for possible NextGen involvement and requested that staff keep both boards informed as procurement and scheduling for the TMP progress.
