Commission forms Esplanade public-art subcommittee; community group offers help ahead of LA 2028

The commission approved a motion to create a subcommittee of up to three members to begin work immediately rather than wait for the next full meeting cycle. Commissioners selected Commissioner Tanner and Chair Christian Kelly as initial members and said a third member could be added later. Staff clarified that the subcommittee’s recommendations would be made to the commission and that the John Parsons Public Art Fund can provide up to $100,000 for Esplanade work in this phase; additional council funding would require separate action.
Joan Irvine, representing Keep the Esplanade Beautiful, urged the commission to include community-group representatives and suggested the group could help with public education, fundraising and programming ahead of the 2028 Olympics. “We would love to see it ready by ’27 so it’s ready for LA 28,” Irvine told commissioners, and offered the group’s volunteer support and marketing contacts.
Commissioners also discussed the role of corporate or philanthropic sponsorships as a possible supplement to the public art fund and asked staff to explore reporting formats that make monthly changes to the John Parsons Public Art Fund easier to track.
The motion to form the Esplanade subcommittee carried; staff will return names and an initial work plan to the commission and will provide copies of the subcommittee’s recommendations for future commission action.
