The Municipal Civil Service Commission on Sept. 24 approved new eligible lists for several city positions, extended existing lists for select job classes and set a promotion exam schedule that includes police lieutenant and captain tests on Oct. 18.
At a meeting in the council conference room, commissioners approved a set of newly established eligible lists that will remain in effect for one year, until Sept. 24, 2026. The lists cover positions including director of housing (open competitive, list no. 2682), housing assistance specialist (promotion, no. 2683), housing assistance aide (open competitive, no. 2684), assistant to the clerk and secretary to the board of education (open competitive, no. 2685), senior office assistant/office assistant (open competitive, no. 2688), secretary to the assistant superintendent for student support (open competitive, no. 2689), secretary to the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction (promotion, no. 2691), junior civil engineer (open competitive, no. 2691A), audio visual technician (open competitive, no. 2692) and painter (open competitive, no. 2692A).
Commissioners also approved extensions of several eligible lists for an additional year. The staff reported extensions including assistant director to the youth bureau (open competitive, list no. 2650) extended to Oct. 30, 2026; deputy fire chief (promotion, no. 2621) and fire chief (promotion, no. 2622) extended to Nov. 17, 2026; and a transportation clerk open competitive list also extended to Nov. 17, 2026 after staff confirmed the correct date would be verified at the next meeting.
The commission set its examination schedule for October, noting that on Oct. 18 it will hold promotion examinations for police lieutenant and police captain and a promotion exam for budget analyst. The clerk or staff member responsible for examinations said there are no September exams and asked commissioners to review schedules for conflicts.
A motion to approve the prior meeting minutes from June 25, 2025 was made and seconded and recorded as approved. The meeting concluded with the commission scheduling its next regular meeting for Oct. 15, 2025, at 3:30 p.m.
Motions and recorded outcomes in the meeting did not include individual vote tallies in the public record of the transcript; the transcript records approvals and seconds but does not list yes/no votes by name.
The actions taken set personnel hiring and promotion processes in motion for a range of city services, including housing, public safety and school-related administrative support. Staff noted they would correct and confirm one extension date at the next meeting.
