Fire Merit Commission certifies executive session and adopts Bloomington Fire Department hiring list

The Bloomington Merit Commission on Sept. 23, 2025, certified an executive session held to receive information about prospective employees under state code and adopted the hiring list presented for the Bloomington Fire Department, voting by voice on each item during a brief meeting with no public comment.

The certification of the executive session and the hiring-list adoption were the meeting’s principal actions. Commission members voted to approve minutes from the June 24, 2025 meeting, to certify that an executive session had been held “to receive information about prospective employees per state code,” and to adopt the hiring list submitted by staff for the Bloomington Fire Department. Each motion was approved by voice vote after commissioners were asked for further discussion and none was offered.

Commission member (Speaker 1) opened the meeting and asked for a motion to approve the June 24 minutes. Commission member (Speaker 2) responded during the motions exchange; the minutes were approved with a voice vote. Later, Commission member (Speaker 1) asked the body to “certify that the Fire Merit Commission held their executive session to receive information about prospective employees per state code.” Commission member (Speaker 2) said, “I move we certify the executive session,” and a second was recorded; the commission certified the session by voice vote. On the hiring list, Commission member (Speaker 1) asked for a motion to adopt the list “as presented to the commission today.” Commission member (Speaker 2) said, “I move we approve,” a second was recorded, and the commission approved the hiring list by voice vote.

Staff reports were brief. A staff speaker announced a swearing-in scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Council Chambers and said the department will hold a ribbon-cutting and open house at Station 3, University Station, on Oct. 6 with an official ceremony at 3:30 p.m. The staff speaker located Station 3 on Woodlawn north of Tenth Street, adjacent to the new Informatics Building. The meeting record shows no members of the public were present. The commission adjourned after the staff update.
