Road work updates: Reed Road reopened; major bridge repair on Taylor Road estimated over $1.8 million

Scott County highway staff briefed commissioners on ongoing road projects Sept. 3, including the reopening of Reed Road and work on Bolton Road and Taylor Road.

The highway superintendent said Reed Road is open and will receive a driving surface similar to a nearby project once crews return. He reported the Bolton Road structure has been removed and the contractor is on target to install a replacement structure by late next week. The superintendent described coordination to obtain a temporary right-of-entry for a day on adjacent private property so the county can provide a culvert and the contractor can install a temporary drive for affected property owners.

On Taylor Road the superintendent said stream scour is removing material beneath an inlet and that crews plan to dig down on the roadside, place riprap and add a wing wall bolted to the side to stop material loss. He described the bridge as a long-term asset and said "it's probably worth putting money in. I mean, it's probably to have another 50 to 70 years of service line," and estimated the project cost at about $1,819,000, calling it "probably a couple million dollar bridge." He and staff discussed crew counts for excavation and setting link walls and noted scheduling will depend on trucking, matting and weather.

Commissioners asked for continuing updates on schedules and rights-of-entry; highway staff said they will monitor trucking logistics and return with targeted dates.
