City librarian highlights accreditation, extended hours, new staff and exhibit plans

City librarian Norinda Sufi updated the Roseville Public Library Board on Sept. 22 about accreditation, operational changes, staffing and upcoming projects in the libraries, parks and cultural arts division.
Sufi said the Parks, Recreation and Libraries (PRL) agency was a four-time gold medal finalist at the national conference for parks and recreation and was unanimously approved for accreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), meeting all 154 standards. “PRL was unanimously approved for accreditation and applauded for meeting 100% of 154 standards,” Sufi said.
Sufi said the downtown library’s extended summer hours were successful, generating more than 6,000 additional visits while the library was open Sundays and holidays and with longer weekday hours. Based on that uptake, she said the library plans to offer extended hours again next year and to keep regular hours on most days over the December holiday period, with early closures only on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
On collections and services, Sufi said the library has launched a new online speaker series, Library Speakers Consortium, and that the Friends of the Roseville Public Library funded a full-access New York Times subscription for patrons. She said demand for Hoopla, a digital content service, has grown as neighboring jurisdictions scaled back their subscriptions, and the library reduced the number of Hoopla items per user from eight to five to sustain the service.
Sufi announced a new children’s librarian, Magali Coronado, who recently joined staff after serving as a library assistant, and said the city will soon fill an additional vacant children’s-librarian-related position. She also reported two requests for proposals are open: one for downtown space planning to address safety, security and orientation for the city’s largest library, and another for a museum exhibit redesign (the museum plans two temporary exhibitions per year). Sufi provided dates for upcoming cultural events, including an October family festival on Oct. 4 and a reception for a new temporary exhibition, "Walking in Our Mocks," on Oct. 11.
Sufi said there is a planned mural for the South Plaza wall at the soccer complex sponsored by “EU” (as announced) and closed by inviting board questions. Board members praised PRL staff for the accreditation and program work.
Ending: Sufi said the division will continue outreach and planning work with consultants and partners, and staff will return with more details on the downtown planning and museum exhibit contracts.
