Grant County council approves $925,000 bridge appropriation, backs Community Crossings grant application

Grant County Council approved an additional appropriation to the countycumulative bridge fund and voted to join a Community Crossings matching-grant application for next-year bridge and paving projects.

The appropriation totaled about $925,000 and was described by county highway staff as "$300,000 for bridge inspection, $175,000 for repair and maintenance, $50,000 for Bridge 32, and $200,000 for additional for Bridge 110 and 102." The council voted by voice to approve the transfer after a motion and second; no roll-call tally was recorded in the minutes.

County highway staff told the council that the $300,000 inspection work began in September and would cover September and October invoices; the county expects to be reimbursed about 80% of that cost from federal funds. Staff said reimbursement would be recorded in 2026 but that direct payment to the consultant and proof of payment speeds the state reimbursement process.

Council members asked timing and matching questions. A council member asked whether the Bridge 32 project was smaller; staff replied Bridge 32 may be converted to a culvert pipe to reduce cost. Staff said the Bridge 110 and Bridge 102 items are at the early design stage and estimated construction would not begin until 2026 or 2027 pending permitting, design and right-of-way work.

Separately, the council voted to authorize the county to apply for the Community Crossings matching grant, which accepts applications from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31 and typically awards funds around Jan. 1. Staff said the county would commit to the required 50% local match and noted the county can seek up to $1 million in awards. The council approved a financial-commitment letter and authorized the council president to sign it.
