Board accepts $10,000-plus in community gifts including Live Like Gina donation to transition program

The Monticello School Board on Sept. 22 accepted several community donations to district programs, including support for robotics, early-childhood family literacy and a transition program for young adults with special needs.
Superintendent Eric Olsen introduced the gifts. Olsen said the district “cannot do the incredible things that we're doing and have such an impact on students without our community giving donations like that.” The board voted to accept: $3,000 from the Jean Haas Foundation for the Monty Python robotics team; $3,000 from the Ellison Foundation for the district “Rally to Read” initiative serving families with children birth to 4; and $4,000 from the Live Like Gina Foundation for the district’s C5 transition program for 18- to 21-year-old students.
Members of the Live Like Gina Foundation presented at the meeting. Dinah Schaefer, speaking for the foundation, said they held a recent “Live Like Fest” and “we raised, I think, over $9,000” and chose to allocate a portion to the district’s transition program. Schaefer described the C5 program as a transition service for young adults with special needs that focuses on life skills.
The acceptance motion was made by Jeff Hegley, seconded by Mark Branson, and passed 6–0.
Board members thanked donors and volunteers and noted that community giving helps sustain extracurricular and family-facing programs that are not fully funded through regular district operations.
