Red Wing Public Schools: Board approves levy maximum, strategic plan and donations; several items advance

Red Wing Public School District trustees voted on several district actions during their Sept. 22 regular meeting, approving a maximum levy for 2026, adopting the district strategic plan for 2025'130, accepting multiple donations and granting initial approval to a new policy on generative artificial intelligence.
The board approved a maximum levy of $10,220,000 for 2026, a figure the superintendent described as subject to change before final certification. Trustees also voted to adopt the district's strategic plan for 2025'130.
The board accepted a package of donations and grants to school programs and activities and approved two policies (numbered 6-20 and 6-21 in the meeting packet) as presented. Trustees also took a first reading of Policy 5.24.1, a draft supplement to the district's acceptable use policy that would govern responsible and ethical use of generative AI; the policy will return for additional readings and edits.
In a closed session earlier in the month, the board completed the superintendent's performance review. At this public meeting trustees voted to accept the summary of that evaluation, which the meeting minutes describe as finding the superintendent's progress on predetermined goals satisfactory.
Trustees also approved two proposed legislative resolutions to be submitted to the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA): one tied to the draft AI-use policy and another recommending that the Minnesota Department of Education replace the MCA tests with district progress-monitoring systems such as FastBridge for growth measurement.
