The Burlington Community School District board on Monday approved the district—s monthly ESSER/Save construction status report, including a change request of $43,429.26 to replace aging HVAC units and acceptance of a contractor completion certificate for several site work packages.
The report, presented by Will (staff member) and Tim (staff member), summarized work across multiple bid packages: retainage remains on bid packages 1 and 2 because of warranty and insurance issues, bid package 3 has been paid, and closeout paperwork remains for bid package 4. Will said the district is "just trying to make sure we get all of the bits and pieces of the extensive HVAC equipment stuff all tested and balanced properly." He added that the project is in the punch-list phase after the first week of school and that most work is substantially complete.
The update noted several project-specific items. The new gym floor is playable after minor threshold and basework was finished; two volleyball sleeves on side courts were installed incorrectly and temporary fixes will be in place for an event the next day, with a permanent fix expected later in the week. Locker-room partitions were delayed when some panels arrived the wrong size; LED lighting that was added later will be completed in 2026 due to supply timing. The report also listed change request 292, described as HVAC replacement in Room S301, at $43,429.26; the board was asked to approve that amount as part of the report.
Board members asked for routine follow-up: a walk-through of locker-room areas before a scheduled event, confirmation that the gym court would be used for homecoming events, and clarification that the HVAC change order was included in planned extra funds rather than an unanticipated overrun. Tim said the HVAC units in S301 dated from 1980 and had ongoing maintenance issues; the $43,429.26 item had been identified previously as an enhancement the district expected to fund from available project contingencies.
In a single motion to approve the ESSER/Save monthly status report "with the changes noted," the board approved the report and the items it contained. The motion passed.
