Pryor parks director: cemetery work mostly complete; burials 'come in spurts'

Director Frank Powell told council members that cleanup and dirt work at the city cemetery following past tornado damage is largely finished and that remaining work will continue through the winter as needed.
Powell said stones have been reset and that recent rain would help compact dirt work and settle the grounds. "Cemetery, they the guys, except for some trees, tornado damage, they've got all cleaned up, dirt work... Now this rains will pack that in and maybe settle it," Powell said.
On burial patterns, Powell said demand "goes in spurts," adding that while the cemetery performs more cremation internments than in past decades, the burial mix varies over time. "We probably definitely do a lot more cremains than we used to, but we still do our share of full burials," he said.
Operational notes - Powell said staff have replotted new sections and that some road work and labeling remains before sections are put into service. - He noted staffing challenges seasonally and described efforts to keep grounds and stones maintained.
Ending Powell said additional tree removals and finish work will proceed over the winter; staff and council members agreed to revisit staffing and budget needs in future budget discussions.
