Planning Commission asks Marquette to act on housing, mobility and micro‑mobility plans

Kevin Clegg, speaking for the Marquette Planning Commission, updated the City Commission on the board’s responsibilities and policy priorities and asked for closer coordination on implementation steps.
Clegg said the planning commission oversees development and updates to the community master plan, recommends amendments to the land development code, and performs administrative review of large private development proposals and public project reviews. He noted the commission adopted a new community master plan last year and currently has seven of nine positions filled; one planning commissioner must also serve on the board of zoning appeals, a role currently held by Dallas Feder.
On priorities, the planning commission flagged housing as its top concern and recommended reducing the number of short-term rental units to 250. The commission also urged progress on mobility and transit — noting a previously recommended bus route has not moved forward — completion and funding for a bike routes plan, better sidewalk maintenance and enforcement against plow-created sidewalk obstructions, and review and action on a draft micromobility plan. Clegg also identified climate action planning as an item the commission is eager to pursue.
Commissioners asked questions about the short-term rental recommendation. Mayor Pro Tem Schlegel suggested the commission consider differentiating homestays (room rentals) from whole‑home short‑term rentals; Clegg said the planning commission would take that suggestion under consideration. Larson and other commissioners thanked Clegg for stepping into the planning commission chair role and for the work on the land development code.
Clegg recommended periodic joint meetings between the city commission and planning commission after the planning commission completes its winter review of the land development code to improve coordination on master‑plan updates and implementation efforts. No formal action or vote was taken at the Sept. 8 meeting; the presentation was informational.
