Board favors simple signage for extension and plans trailhead workday to tidy trail entrance

The Kosciusko Parks and Recreation Board discussed signage for the Chinworth Trail extension and recommended keeping signage simple for now: small metal identity signs with the Parks and Rec logo at both ends of the extension and a mileage marker at the west end toward Creighton Brothers.

Board member Mike presented a proposal to keep signage minimal while the county evaluates a future, county‑wide trail naming and wayfinding strategy. Board members agreed to place a small logo sign at the crosswalk before State Road 30 and another at the trail end, add a mileage marker indicating distance to Chinworth Bridge or downtown Warsaw where appropriate, and install a “trail ends/no trail parking” sign at the extension terminus.

The board also discussed existing “no motorized vehicle” signage and agreed that bollards and signage together will be part of encouraging compliance. Members noted some existing street‑crossing signs and no‑motorized‑vehicle signs are already in place at crossings.

Volunteer workday and trailhead cleanup Board members proposed a volunteer workday to remove overgrown shrubs that obscure the Chinworth Bridge trailhead sign and to tidy the immediate area prior to the Oct. 9 ribbon cutting. The board identified Steve as the neighborhood contact for organizing volunteers and said staff will confirm permissions with the historical society for any work on adjacent parcels. Proposed cleanup dates included Oct. 5 (Sunday) and Oct. 7 (weekday); final scheduling will depend on volunteer availability and staff coordination.

Next steps Staff will prepare cost estimates and vendor quotes for the proposed signs, check existing signage inventories (including MACOG / Crossway Trails draft signage concepts), and coordinate volunteer logistics and historical society permissions for the trailhead cleanup.
