Okeechobee TDC approves multiple event grants and sponsorships, including conditioned Jack Links sponsorship and large music‑festival awards

The Okeechobee County Tourist Development Council approved a range of grants and sponsorships for the 2025–26 cycle, voting on individual applications from fishing tournaments, rodeos, music festivals and civic events.

Among the actions the council approved was a $10,000 sponsorship for the Jack Links Cup at Quail Creek, with staff instructed not to release funds until the promoter provides evidence the event will advertise Okeechobee hotels. Council members noted the sponsorship is an advance payment rather than a post‑event reimbursement.

The council also approved significant awards for two major music events: $25,000 to the Okeechobee Music Fest and $8,000 to the Yeehaw Music Fest. Both events draw regional visitors and were characterized in meeting discussion as having strong local economic impact through ticket sales, vendor activity and overnight stays.

Smaller and recurring events received awards or partial awards after debate about historical funding levels and measurable hotel impact. Examples include:

• Florida Airboat Association banquet — funded at $4,000 (request $5,000).

• Okeechobee Battlefield Friends (Battle of Okeechobee) — $5,000.

• Lake Okeechobee Association of Air Boaters — $4,000 (amended from a higher request).

• Palen's Bakery / ‘‘Hometown Hangouts’’ monthly events — $3,000.

• Great Florida Cattle Drive — $2,000 (one‑time request for a special event tied to statewide cattle‑drive finish).

• Run the Rim 5K (Chamber) — $1,000.

• Extreme Bass Series — $10,000 approved but noted as encumbered to the FY26–27 budget year because the event is scheduled in October after the fiscal turnover.

A number of livestock and rodeo organizations were funded in varying amounts after staff presentations and board discussion about camping, stall rentals and hotel nights. The council approved awards for youth and adult rodeos, often reducing requests where staff or board members said much of the participant population camps on‑site rather than stays in local hotels.

Board members and staff repeatedly emphasized the council’s legislative remit — bed tax revenues should be used to increase overnight stays — and several motions included conditions or stronger requirements for post‑event economic reports and documentation of advertising. Staff told the board they will require standard post‑event economic reports and will withhold payments until the required documentation is supplied.

Votes were taken by voice for the majority of items; the meeting record shows motions moved, seconded and passed for each item listed in the agenda.
