County authorizes applications for two $200,000 recreation grants; airboat-launch project advances

The Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners voted Thursday to authorize applications for two Florida Department of Environmental Protection recreation grants.
Parks staff sought permission to apply for a $200,000 FRDAP grant to upgrade lighting at the Willie Alderman baseball field, an application that requires no local match. Staff said the existing lights are outdated and the upgrade would improve efficiency and staff access. Commissioners approved the request unanimously and confirmed the lights will be dark-sky compliant and pointed downward per county policy.
Staff additionally asked to apply for a second $200,000 FRDAP grant for construction work on an airboat launch at the Cliff Betts Junior Lakeside Recreation Area. County staff said mitigation work had already been completed and that the grant would be paired with other funding opportunities to complete the project. The commission approved the application unanimously.
County staff said both grants are no-match applications and will proceed through the state application process; commissioners encouraged staff to pursue all available grant opportunities.
