Muscogee County schools outline multi-tier strategy as chronic absenteeism edges above state rate

Muscogee County School District officials on Sept. 15 presented a multi-tier strategy to reduce chronic absenteeism after reporting the district—s current chronic-absence rate at 22.9%, above the Georgia average of 19.5%.

The presentation by district staff described how the district defines attendance measures, why officials consider chronic absenteeism a districtwide priority and what interventions schools and community partners will use to bring the rate down toward the district—s stated goal of 10%.

District staff told the board chronic absenteeism is measured as students who miss 10% or more of school days for any reason; in a 180-day term that is 18 days or more. The district—s three-year trend showed 26.3% in 2023, 25.8% in 2024 and the current figure of 22.9% for the coming year, data the presenter said indicate progress but underscore continued work.
