Two Tipp City residents announce write-in bids for school board seats

TIPP CITY, Ohio — Two Tipp City residents, Katie Ernst and Karen Kavis, used the Sept. 15 council meeting's public-comment period to announce they have registered as write-in candidates for two school board seats up for election this fall.
Katie Ernst, 636 Fern Avenue, said she has lived in Tipp City for 10 years, is an engineer at a small business in Dayton and is active in school activities including Destination Imagination and the Tippecanoe Education Endowment. Ernst said she is running because the district faces upcoming school construction and needs "disciplined experience, problem-solving leadership." "We are out in the community, we are actively seeking people's awareness that we are registered as candidates," Ernst said.
Karen Kavis, 652 Heatherstone Court, said she has lived in Tipp City for 15 years and cited years of volunteer service in the schools, including PTO leadership, Destination Imagination coaching, tutoring and work with the Tippecanoe Education Endowment and music boosters. Kavis said both she and Ernst are asking voters to pay attention to the write-in process: "They won't just have to check our names; they're going to have to fill in the bubble and then write our names correctly."
Both said two current board members, Amber Drum and Rick Mains, will not seek reelection and that the seats represent an "important investment" as facilities and projects proceed. Neither candidate requested council action; they asked the public to consider their campaigns.
The council did not take any formal action on the announcement during the meeting.
