Board authorizes advertising bids to replace county administration building fire alarm system

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 9 approved a resolution authorizing the county to advertise for bids to replace the fire alarm system in the county administration building and to award a contract if the successful bid falls within budget.
Doug Kaufman presented the item and said the existing fire alarm system dates to the building’s last renovation in 1990 and is becoming unreliable. Kaufman said the system has begun failing to dial out at required intervals and that replacement parts and circuitry are outdated, making continued repairs impractical. He told the board that the Capital Improvements Plan has $100,000 budgeted for the replacement.
Board members asked whether repair would be a viable alternative; Kaufman said the technology is obsolete and parts are not manufactured anymore. A motion to adopt Resolution R090925-09 to authorize advertising for bids and to award a contract within the budget was moved and seconded and passed by roll-call vote.
The resolution directs staff to proceed with the procurement process and to return if award amounts exceed the budgeted amount or if additional board action is needed.
