Board authorizes up-to-$20,000 pledge for PDGA World Championships bid, pending award

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution authorizing a supplemental appropriation of up to $20,000 to support a bid to co-host the 2028 PDGA Professional Masters Disc Golf World Championships.
Nicole Johnson, who presented the request, told the board that if Bedford County is awarded the event its financial obligation would be $20,000, with the City of Lynchburg expected to contribute the other half. Johnson said bids are due Oct. 1 and awards are expected in January; Bedford County would be financially responsible only if it is chosen to host.
Johnson said organizers anticipate roughly 1,000 competitors and more than 4,000 spectators, an attendance level she said would bring national attention and economic activity to Bedford County. Board discussion focused on how the county will be credited in media and promotional materials: Johnson said Bedford County is listed in Lynchburg’s materials but that some early coverage did not always note Bedford when Lynchburg’s press release was first picked up. She said she is working directly with the Disc Golf Pro Tour marketing team and Lynchburg’s marketing staff to ensure joint recognition.
Board members moved and seconded the supplemental appropriation resolution; the board approved the item in a roll-call vote with one board member recorded as voting no. The resolution authorizes the appropriation for bid support and specifies the county’s $20,000 obligation would apply only if the bid is successful.
