Iredell County commissioners say county did not rezone Stamey Farm property for a data center

"The city of Statesville approved the rezoning of the plus or minus 300 acres at their regular meeting last night," Commissioner Stroud said. "The county has not zoned this property as industrial. The request was to the city to rezone the property to a light industrial conditional zoning district. The city approved the rezoning last night. Iredell County Commissioners did not at any time, regarding the vote regarding a data center being located at the Stamey Farm property. This is not the responsibility of the Iredell County Commissioners."
Stroud said neither the property owner nor the applicant, Compass Data Centers, had applied to the county for rezoning and that Compass had not contacted the county commissioners about the project. "End of story," he said.
Other commissioners expressed agreement and said they would push back on elected officials and others who repeat incorrect information about the county's role. Commissioners also emphasized that extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) and annexation are controlled by municipalities, and that the county has limited authority over those decisions.
The board's comments were made during the regular meeting as part of commissioner updates rather than as a formal agenda item. The city action Stroud described was a first reading by the City of Statesville; the board did not take action related to land use or rezoning of the property during the county meeting.
